In my last blog post, I outlined how digital transformation is only truly successful if implemented across the entirety of an organisation and how there are four key elements to consider as part of that process – your business, your applications, your data and your technology.
In this post we will look at step one. This stage involves really examining your business – the core of who you are and what you do within your marketplace.
You must consider your business’ capabilities – in other words, examine each of the activities that you need to carry out as part of your operations – for example, from marketing to customer service, sales to billing. Consider every service that needs to be provided to fulfil those activities. Then think about your organisational structure and how it is set up to deliver your services.
Then you will be in a position to consider how you could potentially transform your business digitally.
Bear in mind that a digital experience needs to be as seamless as a human interaction, if not more reliably so. Consider a positive retail store experience – a consumer entering the store, being greeted personally and served one on one to meet their needs. How could an online store recreate, or improve upon that?
The purpose is to analyse what you are doing well, where the gaps are in your offering and define a clear vision for the short, medium and long-term future.
To illustrate this stage, we can look at a project we carried out for a major utility provider, who did not previously have effective control of its data management system and relied heavily on paper-based systems. To increase efficiencies and accuracy, Neueda carried out a company-wide assessment of over 200 data sources, then held meetings and workshops with key stakeholders and employees to identify the scale and breadth of its existing data. This stage was critical to fully understand every aspect of the organisation, how it functioned, the services it delivered and its structure.
From there, we were able to help build a data management platform using the cloud which provided the organisation with a single view of the truth. It can now manage its data effectively, taking full ownership and accountability for the suite of information it houses. Data is now of better quality and there are no duplications in data recording, with data now able to play a key role in all projects the organisation undertakes.
That transformation wouldn’t have worked without that all important first step – a comprehensive analysis of the business.
Without thoroughly understanding where you are at the present, you can’t begin building a digital roadmap to your future.
