DLWeek- Cloud Roundup

Written by Eleanor Crouch, Digital Leaders

Cloud has seen some great and thought provoking events in Digital Leaders Week. These events took place across the UK, including London, West Midlands and Scotland. The events heard from a variety of speakers from different sectors, advising listeners on how to use cloud and also discussing the much debated topic of GDPR.

In Birmingham we discussed GDPR and how to best prepare for its implementation in 2018. The discussion was lead by speakers including Ian Sherratt, Chief Technology Officer at SCC and Neil Atkins, Director at SCC. They discussed the impact of GDPR on businesses and government, the risks and challenges we need to mitigate, but also the opportunities that arise from it. Read Ryan Ashley’s recap and summary video of the event here.

In Edinburgh, Cloud technologists got together for a Roundtable on Cloud Technology and the Modern Charity. Speakers included Steven Grier, Scotland Country Manager; Darragh Clear, Senior Service Delivery Manager, and Ricky Simpson, Cloud Technical Solutions Professional. They discussed why Cloud technology is relevant, both economically and practically, for charities and the importance of digital in their strategy.

Yesterday we heard representatives from Digital SME of the Year 2017 UKCloud talk about GDPR in a positive light. The panel of experts were chaired by John Godwin, Director of IA and Compliance at UKCloud. The panel consisted of Gilbert Hill, Privacy Technologist; Mark Bailey, Partner at Charles Russell Speechlys and Nicky Stewart, Commercial Director, UKCloud. The discussion ranged from advising the audience on the preparations for GDPR, the impact (or lack thereof) of Brexit, and the opportunities organisations can take from GDPR.
