Driving extraordinary business outcomes

Written by Mayank Prakash, Director General for Digital Technology, Department for Work and Pensions

DWP is currently delivering the biggest changes for more than 60 years, helping more people move into and progress in work, whilst supporting the most vulnerable.

Our digital transformation efforts are making DWP services simpler and faster for the department’s 22 million customers. We’re reimagining user experiences, making DWP more effective and efficient, and improving outcomes for society. A vision as ambitious as this on a scale larger than most FTSE 100 companies requires the best talent across the country.

We’re hiring but we are different

Central to this transformation is a relentless focus on culture and capability. We believe in the power of diversity in making great things happen and I’m passionate about redressing the gender balance in digital roles.

At DWP Digital, we take business ownership of designing and delivering outcomes – which is why we never use the word ‘business’ to exclude ourselves. We are not looking for IT talent to deliver requirements defined by the business. We are not a service provider content with meeting our service level agreement. We challenge ourselves to understand our business and decide what is best for our business.

We recognise that this view excludes many in the IT profession who are used to waterfall delivery. And because we care about long-term careers of colleagues who join us, it’s better for you to know upfront that we’re looking for business owners and change leaders who understand how to design and develop solutions to deliver outcomes.

Digital transformation on this massive scale can only be led by participative leaders. Participative leaders lead with their tenacity, enthusiasm, understanding of what they do, curiosity to learn from the best across industries and the ability to deliver through matrix teams.

Secondly, we are only as good as the talent in our teams who we work with to apply design-thinking, innovative technologies and agile iterative approaches to re-imagine business outcomes. This is why we’re hiring hundreds of specialists in roles including user researchers, business architects, hybrid cloud engineers, software developers and product owners. We’re looking for experts who are interested in making a genuine difference to society and who thrive on complex and unique challenges to drive forward the UK’s biggest digital transformation.

Empower and inspire

I’m also strengthening our executive team, which drives DWP Digital to be the best at what we do: a creative, collaborative and motivated digital organisation, with colleagues who are proud to make a positive difference to millions of people’s lives.

As well as being part of the DWP Digital leadership team, the executive team roles that we are currently recruiting are key to the strategic direction of the wider DWP, and indeed the Civil Service as a whole.

As Senior Civil Servants, the successful candidates for these roles will be inspiring, confident and empowering leaders, who welcome the responsibility for the effective delivery of the department and the wider government’s programme and ministers’ priorities.

A unique opportunity

As the UK’s largest IT estate, few other organisations offer the opportunity to innovate, design and implement the latest technologies to reimagine business outcomes on such a massive scale.

We’re reducing our reliance on big, fixed contracts; designing and delivering more products and services ourselves and working with a much wider range of innovative global partners.

We are inspired by our social purpose, to exploit its potential in improving public services. As well as challenging and rewarding jobs that make a difference to people’s lives, we offer competitive salaries and pension options, a strong learning and development offer, and a culture that values work-life balance.

We aim to be the best at what we do

We are looking for exceptional people to bring creativity, curiosity and a desire to drive through change and make a difference.

Transformation is a messy business but we like getting our hands dirty. We have designed and developed the digital service underpinning Europe’s largest transformation by building and integrating 20 digital products. We have scaled a dozen digital services, winning many awards as we serve millions of customers. We have set up and scaled hybrid cloud hosting on a massive scale deploying full integration with leading public cloud services along with 64km of fibre cable, 250 network devices and over a thousand racks. And while we were doing all this, our service uptime has improved every year and we saved over £150m every year. We have hired hundreds of colleagues and our employee engagement went up by 9 percentage points. You can see why our global peers are taking notice of our transformation journey.

Digital skills are in high demand and recruiting the best talent is always going to be a challenge, but we believe that our ambitious vision will help attract the expertise we need. Our commitment to building our capability means we care about new colleagues developing their careers and learning.
