The West Midlands has long established itself as one of the fastest growing digital economies in the UK, with clusters around Edtech and Software development and particular capabilities around advanced manufacturing, Mobile and tablet development, cyber security and payments infrastructure.
To sustain these fast-paced and dynamic sectors, the region will need its schools, academic institutions, and existing work force to develop relevant digital skills. This will also ensure the West Midlands continues to be an attractive location for people with the relevant skills to stay in the region to help develop and grow the economy.
However, the workplace is changing and latest research from Harvard shows that a person starting work today may have as many as 11 separate jobs in their career; that traditional career paths are disappearing; and that while technology skills are now the most important that social skills and being able to “play nice” in the workplace are becoming the most valued skills.
